What Watream is

Watream is a searchable directory of free, publicly available live television. Broadcasters, public institutions and community stations publish their signal openly on the internet; those addresses are collected by the open-source iptv-org project, and this site makes them usable. There is nothing to install, no account, and no payment. Pick a country or a genre, press play, and the stream comes directly from the broadcaster to your browser.

We currently list 9,600 channels from 177 countries, of which 7,524 play directly in a browser. No video passes through our servers. We index addresses and nothing more.

Why some channels do not play

Free streams fail for four distinct reasons, and telling them apart is the difference between a fixable problem and a permanent one. A channel may be restricted to viewers inside its own country, which shows up as a refusal no setting on your side can change. It may work perfectly while still being unplayable in a browser, because browsers require a permission header that desktop players like VLC ignore. It may have simply gone offline. Or the address may no longer exist at all.

We measured this rather than guessing. Across 13,968 stream addresses we tested, 67.6% worked, 18% never answered, 7% were geo blocked and 3.3% were permanently gone. Sport fares worst by a wide margin: only 56% of sports channels have a source a browser can load, against 85% for news. Read the full analysis, including why our first measurement run was wrong by a factor of ten.

What we leave out

The public dataset holds just over 41,000 entries and fewer than a quarter reach this site. We drop everything with no working source, everything on the upstream copyright blocklist, which covers 1,211 channels removed after complaints and 367 removed as adult content, anything else flagged adult, and channels that have closed. The exclusions are re-applied on every rebuild, not once.
